The Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) is split into the Broad General Education (BGE)- for S1,S2 and S3 - and Senior Phase for S4, 5 and 6 pupils.
Prior to this, the 5-14 system was used and pupils worked on levels A to F from Primary to the end of S2 ; S3 and S4 led to Standard Grades ( Credit/General , General/Foundation,Foundation, Access 3)
;S5 led to Highers or Intermediates and S6 Advanced Highers, Highers or Intermediates.

Senior Phase
National 1, 2 , 3 and 4 do not have external exams. National 5 roughly matches GCSE , Higher and Advanced Higher roughly match AS2 and A Level.
