Amplitude and Period

The amplitude is half the distance between the maximum and minimum values of the graph.
The period is the length of 1 cycle of the graph.

Example 1

y = sin x has amplitude 1 and a period of 360°

Example 1
Example 2

y = 2 sin x has amplitude 2 and a period of 360°

Example 2
Example 3

y = sin x + 1 has amplitude 1 and a period of 360°

Example 3
Example 4

y = sin 2x has amplitude 1 and a period of 180°

Example 4

This has 2 cycles every 360°.

Example 5

y = cos 5x has amplitude 1 and a period of 72°

Example 5

Remember
To find the period, divide 360° by the number before the x.
The number before the x tells you how many cycles will occur.
